I can’t recommend this book without that disclaimer. Unfortunately there is a ton of (im)mature language it definitely pushed the limits of what I’ll tolerate. Their investigation leads to so great and unexpected geeky results, and a really fun story is the result. Mind you, I am exactly the sort of person who would love. I have some issues with the novellas in the back of the book but I consider the main story to be damn near perfect. As Redshirts themselves, they have a vested interest in getting to the bottom of things. RED SHIRTS by John Scalzi remains one of my all-time favorite books so if you’re looking for an unbiased recommendation then you’re probably looking in the wrong place. It doesn’t take long for them to realize the death rate among red-shirt-wearing new guys is weirdly high. Andy Dahl and his friends are new members of the Intrepid, the flagship starcruiser of Universal Union–or Dub U, and those of us in the know like to call it. This is the story told from those Redshirts point of view.

But those poor Ensign’s in those red shirts…. If you’ve ever watched Star Trek, you know what happens to the guys in the red shirts–they’re always the ones who die! The main characters always wore blue or gold…and somehow they always made it. And it’s such an oft-used trope in TOS that it has its own name in the sci-fi world: Redshirts, to refer to a stock character or a random extra who is introduced only to be killed just as swiftly by the writers to heighten the sense of drama and peril, yet leave the main cast unharmed.
